Medical termination

Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP), also known as a medical abortion, is a safe and effective way to end an early pregnancy using medication rather than surgery. Dr. Vladana O'Neill offers compassionate, confidential care for women seeking medical termination, ensuring safety and support throughout the process.

What is a medical Termination?

Medical termination uses medications to terminate a pregnancy during the early weeks, typically within the first 9 weeks of gestation. It involves taking two types of medication that work together to end the pregnancy.

  • Mifepristone: This medication blocks the hormone progesterone, which is necessary to sustain a pregnancy.

  • Misoprostol: Taken later, this medication causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.

Who is eligible?

Medical termination is generally an option for women up to 9 weeks pregnant. Dr. Vladana O'Neill will assess your individual circumstances, medical history, and gestational stage to determine if this option is suitable for you.

What to Expect

  • Consultation:

    • A confidential consultation with Dr. O'Neill includes a thorough review of your medical history and an ultrasound to confirm the gestational age of the pregnancy.

    • You’ll have an opportunity to ask questions and discuss the process in detail.

  • Medication Process:

    • Step 1: You will take the first medication, Mifepristone, in the clinic. This blocks the hormone necessary for the pregnancy to continue.

    • Step 2: After 24-48 hours, you will take the second medication, Misoprostol, at home. This will cause cramping and bleeding, similar to a miscarriage, as the pregnancy is expelled.

  • Follow-Up:

    • Dr. O'Neill will schedule a follow-up appointment within 1-2 weeks to ensure the procedure was successful and that there are no complications. There will be no charge for the follow up appointment and its vital to attend.

Aftercare and Recovery

  • Bleeding: You will experience bleeding and cramping, which is normal and can last for several days to a week. This is part of the body’s natural process of expelling the pregnancy.

  • Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relief such as ibuprofen can help manage cramping.

  • Emotional Support: It’s normal to feel a range of emotions after a termination. Dr. O'Neill and her team are here to provide emotional support and resources to help you through the recovery process.

  • Contraception: Dr. O'Neill can discuss your contraceptive options moving forward, including long-term methods like IUDs, implants, or oral contraceptives.
